Jean Schild of Geneva (SUI) was the initiator of the European Curling Championships. In Zürich (SUI) in November 1974 a six-nations tournament was held. The six nations were Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy and Norway. During this tournament a meeting took place in which the idea of having a European event was discussed and agreed upon. In March 1975 Jean Schild brought this idea to the meeting of the ICF (nowadays the WCF- World Curling Federation) where it was decided that European Curling Championships for men and women were to be established.

The first European Curling Championships were held in Megève (FRA) in December 1975. Jean Schild became the first President of the European Curling Council with André Viscolo as Secretary. Under Eric Harmsen's presidency the name was changed to European Curling Federation. In 2000 the constitution was changed and the position of ECF Vice-President was added.

At the Semi-Annual General Meeting held in April 2004 at Gävle, Sweden it was decided to implement a new competition from 2005 onwards: The European Mixed  Curling Championships.
